  2. Moffat says 2 Part Episodes are hurting Doctor Who

#DoctorWho - Moffat says 2 Part Episodes are hurting Doctor Who. Really?!? Cause in my opinion the best episodes in New Who have been the 2 Part episodes.

It reminds me of when the producers of the X-Files stated that all the “Mythology” episodes were “hurting the X-Files” and they were going to switch to stand alone  episodes. The show then quitely died.

I’ve been watching a lot of Classic Doctor Who recently. It reminds me of how  satisfying the 2 hour episodes of Classic Who were. They felt like (and are packaged and sold as) Doctor Who movies.

Sure some of the Classic Who episodes occassionally suffered from some padding. However, I’d rather feel like an episode had a little more story than needed than feel rushed.

You need that breathing room to tell a story with layers and nuance.

I watched ‘The Green Death’ last night. A good 12 minutes of the story was just the Doctor in a room agonizing over the loss of Liz Shaw. His walking out of a party and driving away in the dark on his own. Sad, lonely and perhaps a bit bitter. What’s more there were tons of those little moments throughout the serial.

That scene provides a real insight into The Doctor’s relationship with his companions and his character. To me they are what I will remember about the episode and not the menace of mutated slugs.

New Who couldn’t devote 12 minutes to a scene like that because, at a 45 minute run time, it would bite into 1/3 of the time needed to tell the story. So it’s all about running through corridors and saving the Earth. No time for the slow moments which can make a good story a classic.

The 2 part episodes in New Who are the closest thing we get to the Classic Who format. An opportunity to tell a story in an unrushed manner. We loose that we’ll lose the soul of the show.

Then New Who will just become a ‘Monster Of The Week’ show. If that’s what you want then go watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Supernatural.

This is a huge mistake which I hope doesn’t signal the beginning of the end for New Who.

  4. #DoctorWho I want to blow up this DVD cover into a large poster and frame it. Love this, reminds me of a movie poster for one of those serials that inspired George Lucas to create Indiana Jones.
